A Expiacao/The Atonement
"We all participated in the councils of heaven that provided for moral agency, knowing that there would be mortal pain and even unspeakable tragedy because of the abuse of agency. We understood that this could leave us angry, bewildered, defenseless, and vulnerable. But we also knew that the Savior's Atonement would overcome and compensate for all of the unfairness of mortal life and bring us peace."
(Elder Quentin L. Cook, "Personal Peace: The Reward of Righteousness", April 2013 General Conference)
"Even with the trials of life, because of the Savior's Atonement and His Grace, Righteous living will be rewarded with personal peace."
(Elder Quentin L. Cook, "Personal Peace: The Reward of Righteousness", April 2013 General Conference)
"The Savior's Atonement lifts from us not only the burden of our sins but also the burden of our disappointments and sorrows our heartaches and our despair. I promise you He is not going to turn His back on us now. When He says to the poor in spirit, 'Come unto me,' He means He knows the way out and He knows the way up. He knows the way because He is the way."
(Elder Jeffrey R. Holland, "Broken Things to Mend", April 2006 General Conference)
"As you bind up the wounds of those in need and offer the cleansing of His Atonement to those who sorrow in sin, the Lord's power will sustain you. His arms are outstretched with your to succor and bless the children of our Heavenly Father, including those in your family."
(President Henry B. Eyring, "Come unto Me", April 2013 General Conference)
"I bear testimony that living an obedient life, firmly rooted in the gospel of Jesus Christ, provides the greatest assurance for peace and refuge in our homes. There will still be plenty of challenges or heartaches, but even in the midst of turmoil, we can enjoy inner peace and profound happiness. I testify that the Atonement of Jesus Christ is the source of that abundant peace."
(Elder Richard G Scott, "For Peace at Home", April 2013 General Conference)
"Understanding what we can of the Atonement and the Resurrection of Christ helps us to obtain a knowledge of Him and of His mission. Any increase in our understanding of His atoning sacrifice draws us closer to Him. Literally, the Atonement means to be 'at one' with Him. The nature of the Atonement and its effects is so infinite, so unfathomable, and so profound that it lies beyond the knowledge and comprehension of mortal man."
(Elder James E. Faust, "The Atonement: Our Greatest Hope", October 2001 General Conference)
"We long for the ultimate blessing of the Atonement-to become one with Him, to be in His divine presence, to be called individually by name as He warmly welcomes us home with a radiant smile, beckoning us with open arms to be enfolded in His boundless love. How gloriously sublime this experience will be if we can feel worthy enough to be in His presence! The free gift of His great atoning sacrifice for each of us is the only way we can be exalted enough to stand before Him and see Him face-to-face. The overwhelming message of the Atonement is the perfect love the Savior has for each and all of us. It is a love which is full of mercy, patience, grace, equity, long-suffering, and, above all, forgiving."
(Elder James E. Faust, "The Atonement; Our Greatest Hope", October 2001 General Conference)
"The precise nature of the test of mortality, then, can be summarized in the following question: Will I respond to the inclinations of the natural man, or will I yield to the enticings of the Holy Spirit and put off the natural man and become a saint through the Atonement of Christ the Lord (see Mosiah 3:19)? That is the test. Every appetite, desire, propensity, and impulse of the natural man may be overcome by and through the Atonement of Jesus Christ. We are here on the earth to develop godlike qualities and to bridle all of the passions of the flesh."
(David A. Bednar, "We Believe in Being Chaste", April 2013 General Conference)
"...however late you think you are, however many chances you think you have missed, however many mistakes you feel you have made or talents you think you don't have, or however far from home and family and God you feel you have traveled, I testify that you have not traveled beyond the reach of divine love. It is not possible for you to sink lower than the infinite light of Christ's Atonement shines."
(Elder Jeffrey R. Holland, "The Laborers in the Vineyard", April 2012 General Conference)
"The Savior's suffering in Gethsemane and His agony on the cross redeem us from sin by satisfying the demands that justice has upon us. He extends mercy and pardons those who repent. The Atonement also satisfies the debt justice owes to us by healing and compensating us for any suffering we innocently endure. 'For behold, he suffereth the pains of all men, yea, the pains of every living creature, both men, women, and children, who belong to the family of Adam" (2 Nephi 9:21; see also Alma 7: 11-12)"
(Elder D. Todd Christofferson, "Redemption", April 2013 General Conference)
"No matter how hard we work, no matter how much we obey, no matter how many food things we do in this life, it would not be enough were it not for Jesus Christ and His loving grace. On our own we cannot earn the kingdom of God - no matter what we do. Unfortunately, there are some within the Church who have become so preoccupied with performing food works that they forget that those works - as food as they may be - are hollow unless they are accompanied by a complete dependence on Christ. It is this dependence that causes us to want to sing what Alma eloquently referred to as 'the song of redeeming love' (Alma 5:26)"
(Elder M. Russell Ballard, "Building Bridges of Understanding", 17 February 1998 at the Logan [Utah] Institute of Religion)
"Perhaps there is nothing to compare with the peace that comes from a sin-wracked soul unloading his or her burdens on the Lord and claiming the blessings of the Atonement."
(Elder Quentin L. Cook, "Personal Peace: The Reward of Righteousness", April 2013 General Conference)
Position Statement
I am so grateful for the atonement in my life and the life of all those who have lived on this earth. I know that I don't know all those who have lived on this earth but I am glad that all have the opportunity to make it back to the presence of our Heavenly Father even those who have or are doing very harmful things because it means that there is equal opportunity for all to return especially knowing that even if they didn't hear the gospel during there life they still have the opportunity to hear and except after this life. Also I am grateful to know that the atonement covers those with mental handicaps. I hope that as I continue to learn more about the atonement that I will be able to apply it more in my life and that I will serve as a better and better example of His love for all men and the miracle of the atonement.
